Reflexology is a science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body . . .

Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas.

Reflexology includes, but is not limited, to the following:

The soles of the feet and the palms of our hands are a mirror image of the whole body because it is here that energy terminates and the reflexes are found. If there is an energy blockage in any zones, then pain will be experienced by the patient when that particular area is being treated on the feet.

Energy blocks in the zones can have many causes, stress, bad diet, a lifestyle that is no longer correct, a broken marriage or relationship, to name but a few.

When working on the feet of a patient, healing energy flows through us, into our hands and into the patient. The energy of the earth comes through our feet, the energy of the universe flows through our crown chakra and both of these energies meet in the heart centre where they are united in love.

From the heart this energy flows through our arms and into our hands and fingers.

Finger Free Reflexology

Finger free reflexology is a technique that incorporates working on the zones and meridians of the feet.

Discovered by Dr William Fitzgerald and Dr J S Riley it is very effective when incorporated into the everyday treatment of clients.

Part of this therapy is about restoring the energy that flows through channels in the body.

Finger free reflexology works on the ten zones that run from the top of the head to the tips of the toes and fingers.

This treatment is similar to receiving shiatsu or acupuncture, but without using needles. Working on the meridians and the flow of energy through them, can have a bearing on all the organs, systems and glands of the body. The meridians circulate energy from one meridian to another in a continuous flow, and each affects the other.

Precision Reflexology

Precision Reflexology focuses on a very light touch, but is very powerful and effective.

This can be done as a treatment on its own, or can be adapted to enhance a treatment where appropriate.

It does not rely on any physical pressure, it involves holding two or more points to amplify the effect for a greater benefit.

It is used for a number of disorders including stress, the immune system and digestive problems, etc.

Precision reflexology will stimulate and bring about a balance within the body which will encourage healing, and give the client a sense of well-being.

Reflexology & Pregnancy

The therapist may come across clients who are pregnant, trying to conceive or who have recently had a baby and are breast-feeding.

It is important that the therapist has good and caring communication skills, so that they can play an invaluable part in supporting women during this valuable time.

In addition to the normal information required before a treatment, it is important to obtain more detailed information about the progress of the pregnancy and any complications which may have occurred in this or previous pregnancies or labours.

The therapist would take note of the client's:

Women trying for a baby . . .

Treatments are good for fertility issues, as the overall health of the whole person is looked at during the process.

This will allow for hormones to be balanced and also stress levels will be reduced.

It is also a good idea for the dad to have some treatments too.

Treatments can encourage labour, especially if overdue and also women have reported improvements in muscle tension, psychic imbalances, indigestion, poor circulation and general imbalance.

Reflexology will not be carried out in the first trimester, as there may be a fear that it could cause miscarriage.

The treatment should be carried out gradually and within the client’s own comfort zone.

Treatments will not be carried out if the following are present:

Reflexology and Cancer

Reflexology, if used regularly, will enhance any other treatments clients are receiving by keeping the circulating lymph system active.

Reflexology will help cancer patients with symptoms such as pain, sickness and anxiety, it will also help with lifting a patient’s mood and give them a feeling of well-being.

Their quality of life will be improved through a reduction in physical and emotional symptoms.

Fatigue is one of the most distressing symptoms experienced by patients with advanced cancer.

Patients undergoing palliative care have reported a feeling of “being relaxed and comforted” and an achievement of relief from some of their symptoms which may include: appearance, appetite, breathing, communication (with doctors, nurses and family), concentration, constipation, diarrhoea, fear of the future, isolation, mobility, mood, sleep and tiredness.

As therapists we are not allowed to diagnose, prescribe or treat for a specific condition. Reflexology is a complement to standard medical care, it should not be a replacement to medical help. Reflexology can provide a relaxing experience, quality technique as well as educate you how to do it yourself.
